توماس، الذي لا يخفي خلافه التاريخي مع الأسطورة مايكل جوردان، نشر عبر حسابه الرسمي أن روبوت الدردشة ChatGPT صنّفه ضمن أفضل ثلاثة لاعبين في عقد الثمانينيات، إلى جانب ماجيك جونسون ولاري بيرد، مستنداً – بحسب قوله – إلى معايير تشمل الإنجازات الدولية، البطولات الجامعية، الألقاب، جوائز نهائيات الدوري، والمواجهات الحاسمة في الأدوار الإقصائية.
هذا الطرح جاء بعد أيام قليلة من ظهوره التلفزيوني الذي جدد فيه قناعته بأن ليبرون جيمس هو الأعظم في تاريخ اللعبة، في موقف يعكس رؤية مختلفة عن السردية السائدة التي تضع جوردان في القمة بلا منازع.
ويستند توماس في دفاعه عن مكانته التاريخية إلى سجل حافل بالإنجازات، أبرزها قيادة «باد بويز» ديترويت بيستونز إلى لقبين متتاليين (1989 و1990)، وإسقاط عمالقة تلك الحقبة، من بوسطن سيلتكس إلى لوس أنجلوس ليكرز، فضلاً عن التفوق المتكرر على شيكاغو بولز في مواجهات البلاي أوف خلال الثمانينيات.

Thomas, who does not hide his historical rivalry with the legend Michael Jordan, announced through his official account that the ChatGPT chatbot ranked him among the top three players of the 1980s, alongside Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, based on criteria that include international achievements, college championships, titles, Finals MVP awards, and crucial playoff matchups.
This statement came just a few days after his television appearance, where he reaffirmed his belief that LeBron James is the greatest in the history of the game, a stance that reflects a different perspective from the prevailing narrative that places Jordan at the top without dispute.
Thomas defends his historical standing by pointing to a record filled with achievements, most notably leading the “Bad Boys” Detroit Pistons to back-to-back championships (1989 and 1990) and defeating the giants of that era, from the Boston Celtics to the Los Angeles Lakers, as well as repeatedly overcoming the Chicago Bulls in playoff matchups during the 1980s.
However, this assertion did not go unchallenged. Several followers argued that using the results of matchups against the Chicago Bulls of the 1980s overlooks the artistic context of that period, when the team was still in the building phase and did not reach its peak maturity until the end of the decade.
